The Mandrel is a unique holiday home on the Easter Ross peninsula near the pretty fishing village of Portmahomack
The Easter Ross peninsula has it all: breath-taking beaches and coastal walks, challenging links golf courses and historic fishing villages. The pretty village of Portmahomack lies on the east coast of Scotland but faces west. With its well-stocked village shop, pub, two cafes and a special-occasion restaurant with tasting menu, it has everything you need for your self-catering holiday in The Mandrel.
The delightful Highland holiday cottage, designed by renowned local architect Lachie Stewart, nestles in an extensive 1.75 acre plot. The most striking feature of the property is the 52m² open-plan living/dining/kitchen space with two sets of sliding glass doors giving panoramic views over the surrounding farmland. The Mandrel lies between the village of Portmahomack and the Tarbat Ness lighthouse, which towers over the landscape and is a constant backdrop to your stay.
Roe deer and flights of migratory birds can be spotted on the neighbouring farmland from the comfort of the living room. Dog-friendly and with two wood-burning stoves, The Mandrel is the perfect coastal retreat.
The Mandrel is also an ideal location for day trips.
Visit the Royal Burgh of Tain and take in a distillery tour.
Head north to historic Dornoch and Dunrobin Castle.
Take the two-car ferry, which operates during the summer season, to charming Cromarty.
Follow the Pictish Trail along the seaboard villages of Balintore and Shandwick before indulging in some retail therapy at the Anta shop in Fearn.
Drive through beautiful Highland scenery to see the location of The Traitors' Ardross Castle and take a walk up to the Fyrish Monument, scene of one of the missions.
The cottage is the ideal base for a week of golf on the acclaimed links courses in the area.
The annual rainfall is very low by comparison to most of Scotland, and is similar to east Kent. We can almost guarantee that you won't be troubled by midges due to the exposed, coastal location. Huge skies and extraordinary changing light are a feature of life in The Mandrel. You might even be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights!
